Support Coordination vs. Psychosocial Recovery Coaching- Which One Do You Need

Understanding the various types of support options through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be complex, particularly for participants and their families new to the system. The most frequent question we are asked at Coordination Hub is:

What is the distinction between Support Coordination and Psychosocial Recovery Coaching—and do I need either?

A good question—one worth considering carefully. Selecting the right type of support can significantly impact the quality of your use of your NDIS plan, your level of confidence and the amount of progress you make towards your goals.

Below we will take you through what each service provides, who is suited best to use it, and how to determine if it may be the best choice for you or your loved one.

Understanding the NDIS Support Options

The NDIS provides people with disability with more choice and control over their support—but more choice does not automatically make it straightforward to choose.

Indeed, a 2024 report from the University of Melbourne determined that participants from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds experience barriers to accessing their NDIS funds fully. Language barriers, the complexity of the system, and the absence of appropriate support tailored to their cultures are the reasons behind the same.

That’s why we at Coordination Hub specialise in assisting individuals—particularly those from diverse groups or those with mental health issues—to navigate the NDIS with purpose, clarity and dignity.

Let us consider the two services in question.

What is Support Coordination?

Support Coordination is a NDIS service paid for by government that supports you in understanding and using your NDIS plan. A Support Coordinator is your link between you and your service providers and ensures your supports work cohesively and in line with your goals.

Support Coordinators:

  • Assist you to understand your NDIS plan
  • Connect you with the appropriate services and providers
  • Support you with scheduling and appointment booking
  • Help with service agreements and budget management
  • Assist you in developing the skills to ultimately direct your supports yourself
  • Identify and address any service delivery or access issues

This role is particularly beneficial if you have a complicated plan or are new and require assistance with organising and bringing it all together.

Support Coordination tends to be pragmatic and goal-oriented. Its emphasis is the logistics surrounding the accessing your supports to make sure nothing slips through the cracks.

What is Psychosocial Recovery Coaching?

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is a more recent form of support through the NDIS intended specifically for those with psychosocial disabilities—disabilities based on mental health issues.

While Psychosocial Recovery Coaches also assist with support coordination, their primary concern is your mental health recovery journey. They provide ongoing, long-term support with a more emotional and relational style.

A Psychosocial Recovery Coach:

  • Assists you in creating a recovery-focused plan according to your mental health objectives
  • Provides regular check-ins and continuous emotional support
  • Works with you to develop strengths in areas such as
  • Helps you reconnect with community, culture, and meaningful activities
  • Coordinates services while promoting healing and development

Psychosocial Recovery Coaches are usually qualified in mental health or have experience through their own lives. They work in a trauma-informed and strengths-based way and prioritize accompanying you—not merely organizing services.

What’s the Difference?

On the surface, the two services may sound very much the same—they assist with your NDIS plan, link you to services, and provide support. But the distinction is in the extent and direction of the support itself.

Support Coordination is excellent if:

  • You require assistance with understanding the NDIS system and locating suitable providers
  • Your key issues are planning and coordination of your services
  • You need a person who can help out with problem-solving and logistics
  • Your needs are fixed and your goals are largely pragmatic or everyday-function oriented

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is improved if:

  • You have a mental health condition that impacts your day-to-day living
  • You require consistent, understanding support from a person who comprehends emotional well-being
  • You are working towards healing, developing life skills, or rebuilding community relationships
  • You want assistance that targets not only your plan—but your growth as a person

Some participants are even given funding for both services, particularly when they need both complicated logistics and emotional healing. In such instances, the services can complement each other and combine to offer genuinely comprehensive support.

When Mental Health is the Priority

If you are having a hard time staying motivated, feeling isolated, or are experiencing anxiety—or if you’ve struggled to stick with services or meet your goals—then a Psychosocial Recovery Coach might be the answer.

They are trained specifically to work through emotional and psychological issues. They invest time in learning where you’re at, what’s struggled with you in the past, and the way to work with you at your own pace.

Instead of handing you a list of numbers to call, a Recovery Coach can accompany you to your initial appointment, assist you in creating a weekly schedule, or work through difficult times with you so you do not feel isolated.

For our participants at Coordination Hub, trust and consistency such as this are what make all the difference for them.

For Carers and Family Members: Information You Should Know

If you are caring for a family member with disability or mental health issues, recognizing these roles can assist you in being a more effective advocate for their needs.

Ask yourself:

  • Does your loved one require assistance with navigating care providers and scheduling appointments?
  • Do they also require ongoing emotional support and a trusted confidant to speak to?
  • Does your organization have enough staff available to meet your service needs?

If the answer to both categories of questions is yes, it might be worth seeking funding for both services in the next NDIS review.

Remember: this isn’t about labelling someone—it’s about making sure the support matches their needs, strengths, and goals.

Finding the Right Support for You

How to Access the Supports

To access either service, the funding needs to be included within your NDIS plan. Here is what you need to do to get started:

  • Double-check your plan – Check the supports listed as Capacity Building to determine if you have funding available through “Support Coordination” or “Psychosocial Recovery Coaching.”
  • Speak with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) – if you are unsure about what is in your plan or need assistance requesting a change, your LAC can assist you.
  • Request a plan review – if your needs are different or your current supports are no longer meeting your needs, you can request a review to request other services.
  • Take assistance in making the request – Whether you require assistance in preparing your request or obtaining supportive documents, Coordination Hub can assist you.

So—Which One Do You Need?

Here is a straightforward way to consider the situation:

  • If you require a person to assist you with the understanding and coordination of your supports, use Support Coordination.
  • Need someone to companion your emotional health, recovery process and life journey? Select a Psychosocial Recovery Coach.
  • If you require both—ask for both. It is your right to make requests for the accommodations that will assist you in succeeding, developing, and being confident in your future.

Conclusion

Selecting Support Coordination or Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is not about the “better” service. The choice is about the right option for you, your goals, and your personal journey.
